Secret Letters and DMs Book List

6 books you'll fall in love with!

Ever since I read Divine Rivals, I fell in love with the idea of the main characters exchanging secret letters without knowing the other's identity. What really made me fall in love was how I got to know the characters through the letters too, along with in real life, and how the characters got to know each other, really, through the letters, before bringing that together with the person they knew (and probably hated) in their day to day lives. And then I realized there were many other books out there with that trope, books I'd read before I read Divine Rivals and books I read after. Regardless, I love this trope in all of them, exchanging secret letters or DMs in both fantasy and contemporary fiction!

Fantasy

Iris is an aspiring journalist, and both she and her enemy, Roman, are competing for the lead columnist spot at the Oath Gazette. When Iris gets an opportunity to head to the front lines in a war of the gods, she jumps at the chance to leave her narrow-minded town, find out more about the war, and maybe even find her missing brother. She's glad to escape, but is shocked and not sure how to feel when Roman, her enemy, follows her to the front lines just to outshine her again. Well, there might be more to it than it seems, and despite the quickly approaching danger, maybe the two find a way to get closer to each other and maybe even find love.

Why this book?

Well, this list is incomplete without mentioning Divine Rivals. I mean...it's the book that got me into this trope in the first place. I absolutely love this book - it's one of my favorites! I love the storyline, the characters, and especially the letters the main characters exchange. And not only does this book have secret letters and magic typewriters, but it also has a rivals to lovers romance! Read my full review here.

Another fantasy, but this time with undead drudges and undertakers.

You know how some books have the insta-love trope? Well, Hart and Mercy are the embodiment of insta-hate. They can hardly stand each other, and only deal with the other grudgingly. Then one day, Hart sends out a letter, addressed only as "Dear Friend", and somehow, it makes its way to Mercy. From there, a connection is formed between the two 'friends'. Yet neither knows that they're writing to their enemies...and neither knows what danger is approaching, as they strive to be together despite misjudgments and circumstances.

Why this book?

This book definitely fits the list, with Hart and Mercy exchanging secret letters before getting to know each other properly in real life. Other than that, this book is certainly interesting, with magical elements, a touch of mystery, and of course romance! Find my review of this book here.

Contemporary Fiction

It all starts with a letter, a folded up piece of paper, left by her mother's grave. It's how Juliet copes, writing letters to her mother, even though she knows they'll never be read. And then they are, with two added words.

Declan didn't mean to stumble upon that letter in the cemetery, but he did. A haunting letter, filled with grief and emotion that he felt too, he couldn't resist writing back. Soon, the two are writing to each other, first in letters, then through the digital world. But neither knows that the connection they formed with a stranger, where they can be themselves, isn't actually with a stranger. And what happens when their lives in school start colliding with the safe world they've built online?

Why this book?

I recently reread this book and it was just as good as when I read it the first time! As amazing, as emotional, and as engaging. I fell in love with this book and the main characters all over again, and I would highly recommend this book, for not only the secret letters and emails they exchange, but also for everything else.

What happens when your online best friend slash sort of crush turns out to be the same person as your irritating (-ly hot) nemesis and coworker in the new summer job you landed? Bailey has just moved across the country to live with her father, to the same hometown her online friend, Alex, lives in. Scared of how Alex will be in real life, Bailey doesn't tell him. But she keeps butting heads with the museum security guard...the irritatingly hot one, the one who might just be him. But of course, neither knows it yet...and neither knows just what this summer has in store for them.

Why this book?

I really enjoyed this book; it's engaging, funny, and there's lots of fluff in this perfect-for-the-summer-season book!

Kiki loves to play video games. She's a gamer girl - it's her hobby and passion. There's just one slight problem, she plays online as a guy, to prevent harassment. Even her online best friend believes that. And then she transfers to his school... Not only is the new school much worse than she expected, but what if she meets him in real life, and what if her secret is blown? And what if she starts falling for him in real life, amidst navigating life at her new school and the secret she keeps, which now seems more like a burden than protection?

Why this book?

A nice friend group, a sweet romance, and a progressive FMC make this book worth reading!

The one thing Lily hates more than Cody is chemistry class... She spends the block doodling in her notebook. And then one class she writes a couple lyrics on the desk, hoping to make the class go by a little faster, only to find the next day, someone has finished the lines. From there, secret letters are exchanged, witty sentences, and band recommendations. Lily starts falling for her mystery writer through his letters, but she still doesn't know who he is in real life. Is he someone she knows, someone she likes, or that one person she hates only a little less than the torturous chemistry class that brought them together in the first place?

Why this book?

This book is the perfect, light, contemporary fiction complete with secret letters!

So there you have it, a book list full of books with secret letters and DMs you'll fall in love with!
